Gum Depigmentation
Gum depigmentation (also referred to as gingival depigmentation or gum bleaching) is a cosmetic dental/periodontal procedure aimed at reducing or removing dark or pigmented patches on the gums (gingiva).
In healthy gums the usual colour is pink. Dark brown or black patches are typically due to melanin pigmentation, and though often harmless medically, they can affect smile aesthetics.
Causes Of Gum Depigmentation
- Physiological (Natural)
- Smoking (Smoker’s Melanosis)
- Drug-Induced Pigmentation
- Metallic Pigmentation (Amalgam or Metal Tattoos)
- Inflammatory or Pathological Causes
- Post-Traumatic or Chemical Causes
